[From Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Spacecraft Systems Engineer, Missie Vess]
Below you will find the color work pattern for the Roman emblem, the Wide Field Instrument focal plane, seen on figurine Nancy’s knitted blanket in the images below. This color work pattern can be incorporated into a myriad of different knitting projects such as scarves, hats, cowls, pot holders, etc..
The sample seen in figurine Nancy’s blanket, was knit on size 0 needles using a sock-weight yarn, but you can scale up using larger needles and/or thicker gauge yarn.
It is also possible to scale up by proportionally increasing the number of stitches and rows in the color pattern.
You will see in the pattern that the number of stitches and number of rows for each detector are not equal, despite the detectors in the focal plane array being square. I found that with my knitting tension, I needed more rows than stitches to get close to a square for each detector. Feel free to experiment with your own knitting and find what works for you!
