Solar Array Sun Shield (SASS) Solar PanelsThe SASS is made up of six solar array panels. The two center panels remain fixed while the four outer ones are deployed once in orbit. Hinged to fold down against the Outer Barrel Assembly (OBA) during launch, the outer panels will ultimately swing up to align with the center panels. The SASS will be oriented toward the Sun and provide power to the entire observatory. Its secondary function is to shade much of the observatory and help keep the instruments cool.
