NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is a next-generation space observatory designed to settle essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics. The telescope has a primary mirror that is 2.4 meters in diameter and a Wide Field Instrument that will give Roman a field of view 100 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope's infrared instrument, allowing it to capture more of the sky with less observing time.

When Roman captures its first images, each pixel will represent a piece of the cosmos never seen before at this resolution. Claim your pixel and be part of this historic moment! Visit roman.gsfc.nasa.gov or sign up for the newsletter to receive NASA updates in your inbox.

Discover the Roman Space Telescope

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, named after NASA's first Chief of Astronomy, is set to transform our understanding of the universe. With its enormous field of view and advanced infrared detectors, Roman will survey the sky with unprecedented speed and sensitivity.

Roman's Wide Field Instrument will capture images covering an area of sky 100 times larger than Hubble in a single pointing. This capability will enable massive sky surveys that would take decades with other telescopes. The telescope will study dark energy and dark matter, discover thousands of exoplanets, and observe the infrared universe in extraordinary detail.

The Coronagraph Instrument will serve as a technology demonstration, testing methods to directly image planets orbiting other stars by blocking the overwhelming glare of their host stars. This technology is a stepping stone toward finding and characterizing Earth-like worlds.

Roman is currently being assembled and tested at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and is targeted for launch in the coming years.
